O-1 – This alloy is one of the Cold Work, oil hardening type tool steels. It is relatively inexpensive containing small amounts of manganese, tungsten and chromium. Hardening by oil quench minimizes distortion and cracking. Applications include short run tooling for blanking dies, cold forming dies and cutting tools operating at ambient temperature. Machinability of this alloy is very good. It has a rating of 90% that of the W group water hardening low alloy tool steels.

A-2 – This alloy is one of the Cold Work, Medium Air Hardening type tool steels. It contains chromium and molybdenum with a relatively high (1%) carbon content and is capable of deep hardening from air quench so as to minimize distortion. Used of die shapes, slitters and similar applications where wear resistance is important.

D-2 – This alloy is one of the Cold Work, high carbon, high chromium type tool steels. D2 is a deep hardening, highly wear resistant alloy. It hardens upon air cooling so as to have minimum distortion after heat treatment. Used for long run tooling applications where wear resistance is important, such as blanking or forming dies and thread rolling dies.

S-7 – This alloy is one of the Shock Resisting tool steel types.

A-6 – This alloy is one of the Cold Work, Medium Air Hardening type tool steels.

W-1 – W1 is commonly used for hand operated metal cutting tools, cold heading, embossing taps and reamers as well as cutlery. W1 is a plain carbon steel and machines with ease. It is the base line of 100% machinability on which machinability of the other tool steels is compared. The W series of tool steels are a very simple alloy group, low cost, and responsive to simple heating and water quenching for hardening.
