What is Mattison Grinding
Mattison grinding is a specific type of wheel designed for surface grinding advanced metal alloys to a high degree of flatness. Mattison grinding also produces an extremely fine surface finish that can attain precision tolerances. A Mattison grinder uses a grinding wheel spinning around a horizontally mounted spindle. The platform upon which the metal to be ground is secured, and moves back and forth, and in and out beneath the rapidly spinning Mattison grinding wheel.
Why use Mattison Grinding
Mattison grinding is a precision manufacturing process used in the fabrication and finishing of metal parts with very tight tolerances. These metal parts must be finished to extremely tight tolerances or the finished product will not function correctly. Mattison Grinding is also often used for general manufacturing such as regrinding or reconditioning of worn machine surfaces.

The term Spark out is used when precision values are required. In order to perform a Spark Out during Mattison Grinding the work piece is repeatedly passed under the Mattison grinding wheel, without resetting the depth of cut until quite literally “Until the Sparks Are Out”. This ensure an even finely buffed surface finish.
